Point Pelee National Park was established in 1918 and designated the national park status in 1987. Pelee is a French word which means bald, to describe the eastern side of the area that was rocky and had no trees. The park is located on a point of glacial sand, silt and gravel in Lake Erie.

Point Pelee is popular among birdwatchers as it is part of the bird and butterfly migration corridor in Lake Erie. The best time to see over 360 species of record birds within the park premises is during springtime in May, when the migrants make their first landfall. Point Pelee is made up of an area of about 1,564 hectares making it the smallest national park in Canada. Unfortunately, about 97 percent of the area around the park has been modified and converted for industrial, agricultural and urban development making the park isolated from other natural areas.

Besides this park, there is one more park listed in Leamington. You will find the exact location of Point Pelee National Park on the map above. If you need any other information on Point Pelee National Park that is not listed here, please call (519) 322-2365.
