The 0.3 square kilometer Calgary Zoo is home to over 1,000 animals across 272 species. The zoo opened in 1929 and is being operated by the Calgary Zoological Society. The facility was among the first in the country to have been accredited by three associations: AZA, WAZA and CAZA.
Calgary Zoo features six distinct zones. Destination Africa, which opened in 2003, is the most ambitious expansions of all and is made up of four buildings to accommodate a large collection of the flora and fauna of the African rainforests. Canadian Wilds, built in the 1900s, has the majority of North American birds and mammals. The Rocky Mountain Bird Aviary houses several species of birds while the Dorothy Harvie Botanical Gardens is one of the most popular attractions in the area. The Eurasia zone has Eurasian animals while the 6-acre Prehistoric Park showcases life-sized dinosaurs. The Penguin Plunge, which opened in 2012 has outdoor and indoor areas to hold different types of penguins.
