Halifax Citadel National Historic Site

This National Historic Site of Canada was first fortified in 1749 and named after King George II of Great Britain. The area is among the national parks and historic sites that are managed and operated by Parks Canada.

The Halifax Citadel is made up of four defensive fortifications that can be found on the summit of Citadel Hill. Even though it was never attacked throughout history, the Citadel did play an important role in the defense of the Halifax Harbour and the Royal Navy Dockyard.

At present, Fort George, which is what is being fortified on Citadel Hill, has been restored to its mid-Victorian state and has ranked as the most visited of all national historic sites in the entire country.
