The Lachine Canal Historic Site is a canal that passes through the southwestern area of Montreal in Quebec. It has a length of around 14.5 kilometers which starts from the Old Port of Montreal to Lake Saint-Louis. It currently has five locks (originally seven) found in Lachine, Cote-Saint-Pau, Saint-Gabriel and Old Port of Montreal and has a maximum height of 65 feet above sea level.
The name of the canal was derived from the French word La Chine, or China, since European explorers once dreamt of discovering a route from New France to the Western Sea to China. To get to the Lachine Visitor Services Center, one simply has to go to the entrance to the canal in Lake Saint-Louis. The center, which opens seasonally, has exhibits that showcase the building and widening of the canal and also offers guided tours. The center also has a lookout terrace, a gift shop and an outdoor interpretation trail.
