The southeastern area of British Columbia is home to the 1,406 square kilometer Kootenay National Park. It is a part of a World Heritage site and also one of four adjacent mountain parks which include Banff National Park, Yoho National Park and Jasper National Park. It was initially called the Kootenay National Park and was created in 1920.

Kootenay National Park is open to the public all year long but is especially popular from June to September. Their campgrounds can be accessed from early May to late September but, during the winter months, only the Dolly Varden campground is made available. Other park attractions include Marble Canyon, Olive Lake, Radium Hot Springs, Paint Pots and Sinclair Canyon as well as several hiking trails. Because of its relatively small width, most of these attractions can be easily accessed from the road and by wheelchair.
