The city of Saskatoon got its name from the Cree noun misâskwatômina or the violet colored Saskatoon berries that grow in the area. The area was established in 1883 and the first permanent settlement was led by John Neilson Lake. The city is now home to more than 200,000 residents and has been called the Bridge City due to the eight river crossings found in it.
Among the best known landmark in Saskatoon is the Delta Bessborough Hotel, or Bez, one of the last railway hotels built by the Canadian National Railway before the Great Depression.
