The city of Yellowknife, located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, is the capital and also the largest city in the Northwest Territories. It was thought to have been founded in 1934 after gold was found in the area. It quickly became an economic center in NWT but although it had initially been a mining town, its economy later shifted to government services during the 1980s.

Being the largest city, Yellowknife has become a center of tourism and the main entry point for many visitors. Notable destinations in the area include the Wildcat Café, which opened in 1937; the Gold Range Bar, the oldest drinking establishment in the area; and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center. The downtown area of the city provides tourists with access to Capital Area Park, City Hall, the Northern Frontier Visitors Center and the Legislature. Yellowknife also has a number of historical sites such as the Hudson’s Bay Warehouse, Fireweed Studio and the Canadian Pacific Airlines Floatbase.
