There are many things that the capital and second largest city in Alberta is known for. For one, it is considered as the Oil Capital of Canada as it was a hub for petrochemical industries during the 1940s. The city also plays host to a number of festivals all year round, including The Works Art and Design Festival, K-Days, Edmonton International Fringe Festival, Edmonton International Street Performer’s Festival, Canadian Finals Rodeo and several others, making it Canada’s Festival City. Edmonton also boasts of several other attractions. The city has the highest amount of parkland per capita out of any city in Canada with a total of 27,400 acres of parkland. Among the famous parks in the city include the Emily Murphy Park, Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, Henrietta Muir Edwards/ Rafters Landing – three of the women who make up the Famous Five. The River Valley Parks System has access to ravines, lakes and 22 major parks and can be accessed through biking and walking trails.
