Established in 1885 in the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park is the oldest national park in Canada. The park is made up of around 2,564 square miles of mountains, glaciers and ice fields, alpine landscapes and dense forests. It is located around 68 to 112 miles west of Calgary and receives more than 3.6 million visitors each year.

The most visited tourist destination in Alberta features the Upper Hot Springs, a 27-hole golf course and three ski resorts: Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Sunshine Village and Mount Norquay Ski Resort. Visitors love going on day hikes within the park through the Cory Pass Loop but other activities such as horseback riding and alpine and Nordic skiing are also popular. Families can enjoy several activities including climbing, hiking, camping and skiing through the backcountry campgrounds.

A wilderness pass is required to use backcountry facilities and reservations have to be made in advance to use the campgrounds.
